Josh Hutcherson Will Be In Journey 3, Set For Back-To-Back Shooting Schedule Of Mockingjay Films

Since apparently there’s some sort of holiday tomorrow where everybody gives thanks for the things in their life (sounds made up to me), MTV have conducted a thanks-themed interview with Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson.

During the interview, along with being shy about his habit of following Kim Kardashian and espousing his love for reality TV show Gigolos, Hutcherson outlined his plans for 2013.

We’re shooting the next two Hunger Games movies back-to-back, and then I’m shooting another Journey, so as long as the world doesn’t end, I have a busy 2013 coming up.

The journey he’s referring to is the family movie franchise which gave him his first big break: Journey to the Centre of the Earth, which begins filming its second sequel next year.

Mockingjay, the final instalment in the Hunger Games series, has been split into two different parts that will, apparently, be shot back-to-back. It’s becoming a common practice for book adaptations these days, with Twilight, Harry Potter, and The Hobbit all taking the same road. The choice may simply be an artistic one, because editing stories down to make a two-hour movie is hard, and it’s much easier to just include everything from the book.

It’s likely that the studio were equally motivated by financial gains, however. Shooting the two films back-to-back is potentially much cheaper than shooting them separately (see the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, which each had a budget of $125-150m compared to The Half Blood Prince‘s $250m), and since the large fanbase for the books will all pay to see both films, Lionsgate can double their profits by releasing Mockingjay in two parts.

'Hunger Games' Star Josh Hutcherson Thankful For 'A Lot Of Firsts' In 2012

If you're a movie fan, 2012 has been a pretty great year. And even though it's a little early to be thinking about the best of this year, since a lot of potential awards contenders have not yet hit theaters, we have no qualms about naming "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," "The Avengers" and "The Hunger Games" as the 2012 films we're most thankful for.

Here to represent the blockbuster big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestseller is star Josh Hutcherson, who stopped by MTV News recently to chat about his very big 2012.

"I'm very thankful [for 2012] as well," Hutcherson said. "I had a lot of work that came out this year and was pretty successful thus far, so it was exciting for me. It definitely exceeded my expectations."

Speaking specifically to "The Hunger Games," Hutcherson said that in embarking upon an international press tour, he was able to see just how widespread the enthusiasm is for the film, as well as experience a couple big "firsts."

"I had a lot of firsts this year. I went to Paris, London and Berlin for the first time, so I got to see a lot of new places," he said. "I had a blast. The press tour was so fun with me and Liam [Hemsworth] and Jen [Lawrence] and [director] Gary [Marshall] flying all over the world together. ... Being with Liam and Jen was great because we were experiencing something brand-new to all of us. I think Liam had the most experience dealing with [a lot of press], just because of him and [his engagement to] Miley [Cyrus], but having really good people experiencing it with you made it a lot easier."

Hutcherson isn't just thankful for "The Hunger Games" in the last year; he's also happy to have discovered new music and grateful for a second season of the saucy reality show "Gigolos."

"I'm thankful that I've been turned on to the Lumineers," Hutcherson said of the "Ho Hey" group. "I am still watching 'Gigolos.' I haven't been caught up to date on the latest episode, but when I was in Atlanta, I was getting my Gigolo on I was watching the 'Gigolos' TV show."

Something else Hutcherson is keeping up with is Kim Kardashian on Twitter, that is, though he didn't seem aware of that fact.

"I follow Kim Kardashian?" he said when asked about how he chooses who he follows on the social-networking site. "I have my reasons," he added with a smile. "They are top-secret. I can't divulge my secrets."

Finally, what does Mr. Hutcherson want for his 2013 in order for it to outdo the successes he enjoyed in 2012? As it turns out, the 20-year-old has his mind not only on himself, but on the bigger picture.

"There is the obvious that everybody will say, which is a better economy and a better America, so I hope for a better economy, a better America," he said. "Outside of that, we're shooting the next two 'Hunger Games' movies back-to-back, and then I'm shooting another 'Journey,' so as long as the world doesn't end, I have a busy 2013 coming up."

'Catching Fire' Bromance Confirmed! Josh Hutcherson, Sam Claflin 'A Great Match'

We've been rolling in "Catching Fire" goods recently here at MTV News. In addition to the scene-specific details dropped by star Josh Hutcherson regarding arena sequences being shot in IMAX and a wardrobe malfunction during a key scene, leading lady Jennifer Lawrence delighted us with an excellent behind-the-scenes secret. Never mind the romance between Katniss and Peeta; there is a budding bromance between Hutcherson and new castmember Sam Claflin.

Naturally, when we caught up with Hutcherson shortly thereafter, we had to ask him for a response to Lawrence's claim that the two actors are involved in a "full-blown bromance."

"We totally hit it off," Hutcherson admitted of his new friendship with Claflin, who plays Finnick in the upcoming sequel. "He's just one of those guys that's always down to have fun and is generally a good person. We have a similar sense of humor. He likes to play soccer; I play soccer. It's kind of really a great match. Everything just kind of melded together."

Speaking of co-stars who are always down to have fun, we asked Hutcherson if Lawrence, who is prone to joking around on set, had become more serious for "Catching Fire" versus her antics on the set of "The Hunger Games."

"Oh God, no, I think it's gotten worse," Hutcherson said with a laugh. "It's gotten out of control. All of us, if you have me and Woody [Harrelson] and Jennifer on set together, it's like a group of toddlers. I don't even know how we're making this movie."

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson Get Wet On 'Catching Fire' Set

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson hit the waves this week in Hawaii. No, the "Hunger Games" co-stars were not on some kind of vacation. Instead, they were on the island to film the latest scenes for "Catching Fire," the second film in the series.

Both the actors were spotted on set Monday donning matching gray and black wet suits, prepping scenes for the latest round of the "Hunger Games." Lawrence is seen jumping into the water while Hutcherson is standing next to what looks the portal that takes him into the arena. As it goes, both Peeta and Katniss must compete again after surviving the previous games as dictated by the Capitol.

In other set photos, Lawrence was spotted wielding a bow and arrow, her character's weapon of choice, and hanging out with co-stars Sam Claflin and Lynn Cohen, who play Finnick and Mags, respectively. They too were wearing wet suits.

Filming for the November 22, 2013 release began back in September. The actors hit the set in Atlanta, Georgia before they embarked on taking the Games to Hawaii this week. And, if fans think that the set photos look pretty epic, Hutcherson promises that those arena scenes will look even more dazzling when they hit the big screen next fall.

"They're shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX," Hutcherson said when he stopped by MTV News' headquarters before heading to Hawaii. "So when you go see it in IMAX, you'll see the regular movie when we're in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It's very cool."

And it seems that Hutcherson is impressed by all the hard work the crew has put into filming the blockbuster so far. He added, "They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water it looks incredible. I've seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great."

Shirtless Josh Hutcherson and more in latest 'Catching Fire' set photos

The latest photos coming from the Oahu set of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire include a shirtless Josh Hutcherson and the first sighting of actress Jena Malone in Hawaii.

The new photos, posted online Friday, show Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence filming a scene on the beach with director Francis Lawrence. In several images, Hutcherson has stripped off the top of his costume and is seen bare-chested, with a large anchor tattoo on his side. (This is the actor's own tattoo, and will likely be digitally removed for the movie.)

One of the photos also shows Malone standing on a rocky outcropping alongside Hutcherson and Lawrence. These are the first photos showing Malone on the Hawaiian set, although she has been Tweeting about her tropical filming location since this past weekend. Malone plays Johanna Mason, a fierce female tribute with a very large chip on her shoulder.

Filming on Catching Fire is expected to wrap up just before Christmas. The movie hits theaters next year, on November 22, 2013.

Josh Hutcherson Splits Pants Filming Intimate 'Catching Fire' Scene

Spoilers ahead if you have not read "Catching Fire."

In between mouthfuls of tender turkey and sweet potato casserole, MTV News took the time last week to reflect upon a few of the movies we were thankful for in 2012, and it should come as no surprise that the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling "Hunger Games" was among the chosen. As such, star Josh Hutcherson, who plays baker boy Peeta Mellark, stopped by our studios to share his own thankful list ("Gigolos"?), as well as reveal a few details about the in-production follow-up, "Catching Fire."

Among the many moments fans are surely craving is Peeta's proposal to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in front of the bright lights of Caesar Flickerman's cameras. But for Hutcherson, the highly anticipated scene didn't quite go as planned.

"I have proposed to Katniss," Hutcherson confirmed. "It was good. Actually, funny story: When we shot it, the actual proposal itself is done where you don't hear what we're saying, so I was just saying gibberish while I was proposing to her on one knee. Actually, the very first time I went to get down on one knee my pants ripped right down the crotch. The worst thing that could happen when you're proposing to somebody is that your pants rip right down the crotch, and that's what happened to Peeta. So... he's doomed. He's doomed. Poor guy, he just can't catch a break."

Thankfully, the pants predicament seems to be the worst the actor has weathered while filming. In fact, when asked which scenes were his favorite to film so far, Hutcherson was quick with one pivotal moment in particular:

"The Reaping stuff was really great. The Reaping stuff we did was really powerful, really well written," he recalled. "The extras were so awesome. Like, literally, every extra was a very, very talented actor, and so in the really emotional scenes, all the background really brought their A-game. It really added a lot. That was really cool to see that all come together."

Next up, the cast will fly to Hawaii to film the tropically-inclined Quarter Quell.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" lights up theaters on November 22, 2013.

Josh Hutcherson Dishes on Catching Fire Director Francis Lawrence

Catching Fire doesn't start shooting for a while, but the games have begun! I just talked to Josh Hutcherson and guess what he told me about?! He filled me on his first meeting with director Francis Lawrence...

He recently had his first meeting with The Hunger Games franchise's next director, Francis Lawrence.

"I sat down with him a couple of days ago," Hutcherson, 19, told me at the MTV Movie Awards. "He's fantastic. He's such a smart guy. He has some great ideas for the movie.

"I just really like where his head is at," he continued. "I really like him a lot."

Most of their chat focused on Peeta.

"We talked about character development in the stories," Hutcherson said. "As you know, the second book is more complicated than the first, so we talked about the narrative. Everything he said was super smart."

'Hunger Games' star Hutcherson buys house

Joining the ranks of teenage homeowners is “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, who has bought a place in the Hollywood Hills West area for $2.5 million.

The 19-year-old becomes another link in a string of celebrities who have called the place home. Known as the Tree House for its setting among sycamores, the house was owned at different times by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and the late actor Heath Ledger.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom house, built in 1951 and since remodeled, sits behind gates on nearly half an acre. Features of the 1,861-square-foot home include glass walls, polished concrete floors, an office, beamed ceilings and video security. An outdoor living area of 2,500 square feet contains a movie lounge and barbecue space.

Even before escrow closed Hutcherson picked a roommate he adopted a pit bull named Driver from a rescue group.

Hutcherson stars this year in the horror comedy “Detention” and “Red Dawn,” due for November release. He will continue in his role as baker’s son Peeta Mellark in the 2013 sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Public records show the property previously changed hands in 2008 for the same amount Hutcherson paid.
